Culture Wars to Distract from Class Wars

How culture wars are simply diverting our attention from the class disparities that permeate our society

Contemporary discourse, like never before, has taken a dark turn down the avenue of culture wars, led by mendacious politicians and public figures, dominating headlines, and shaping the overall narrative of public opinion and discussion. While to the more politically inclined these seem like futile debates from a bunch of garrulous people, this type of discourse is much more pernicious. They act simply as a distraction from the fundamental struggle that should be the main focus — the class war. I want to elucidate this issue and shed light on how the attention should be on the economic disparities that are ravaging our society from the inside out.

What Are Culture Wars?

Culture wars is the term given to the debates and conflicts regarding social issues and identity. Currently, they are manifesting in the form of media discussions, public protests, and political debates. Topics such as gender identity, abortion, multiculturalism, and same-sex marriage are some of the most polarising examples of culture wars.
